Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to contest certain rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
