Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
